So you just bought a new rug and it looks amazing. You want to make sure that you keep it that way. How do you do that? Just follow these easy tips!
Know Your Rug
Take a minute to make sure that you understand the basics of your rug. What is it made from? What are the recommended care instructions? Does it come with any special instructions form the manufacturer? The tag on rugs aren’t just for decoration, take the time to actually read them.
Protect it from Furniture
Before you put furniture down on your rug, use a protector on the bottom of the feet. This will help distribute the weight evenly and prevent unsightly divots or damage to the rug. It will also prevent any discoloration if the feet of your furniture is dirty or dusty.
Avoid Direct Sunlight
Sunlight can cause the colors in your rug to fade. Don’t use rugs outside unless they are specifically made for outdoor use. Inside, close the blinds or curtains when not in the room.
Rotate Your Rug
This is especially important if one side of your rug receives much more foot traffic than the other side, such as if it’s against furniture. Rotate your rug to avoid one side wearing out faster than the other.
Treat Stains Quickly
If you spill something on your rug, be sure to handle it quickly or it will be more likely to stain. Blot (not rub) the stains with a damp white rag. Scrape up semi-solid spills with a spoon, and vacuum the rest as it dries.
Vacuum Regularly
Along with looking bad, dirt can actually damage the fibers and backing of your rug. Be sure to vacuum 1-2 times a week, at least, to keep your rug in good condition. Also be sure to use the correct setting on your vacuum for your rug pile, if possible.
Schedule a Professional Cleaning
Professional rug cleaners can take care of anything that your vacuum might have missed, as well as remove stains and dark traffic patterns. In fact, professional care is the best way to ensure that a rug lasts a long time.
